Centaur, typography book. Type and Communication Design.

Transcripts
A close, graphical analysis of the classic serif font. Centaur, the font of classic American Literature.

In your face! mono et mono unconventional type.

~Moving Type
“In this impatient age of ‘need it now’ tech and emerging use of AI to generate visual answers and direction
are we on a path to being saturated with ‘new-lazy’ type design?”
“Are new typefaces or fonts necessary? Are they, in fact, ‘new’ at all?”
“Is social media to ‘blame’ for an influx of mediocre typography with limited
context?”
‘In Your Face! StereoType–Mono et Mono’ Studio calls on its students to use heart, soul, creative thinking and design-based skills in order to challenge the standard construct. Through discerning, deconstructing, reassembling and creating type or typographic elements which will translate into concise message/s. Visually creative materials and expressive artifacts demonstrating deep understanding of the subject matter will be delivered in this class.
In Your Face! StereoType–Mono et Mono’ Studio is asking these and many more. Transporting us back to the core of type designin. Demanding us to challenge the ‘norm’, the ‘quick and the ugly’; the ‘Pinterest pretty’; the ‘Microsoft® mundane’, and will set you on a trajectory of font-frenzy, mark-making discovery. Employing hands-on methodologies and processes with an aim of challenging common expectation and outcome.

It’s me again!
Sorry I haven’t been around much to support you lately. I hope you are well, perhaps my efforts to financially support you proves useful :)
Scrounging around, frantically getting myself ready for work now. Can’t seem to find those charity McDonaldland socks anywhere! Shame, were so cute & comfortable...
Hope to write you soon when I’m awake during post office open hours!
So happy to hear back!
Sorry to have missed you at mom’s birthday lunch :( Safe to say she loved your gift! She very much appreciate the work and hours youv’e put for this, thank you!
Hope to see you out again on break, good to hear it coming so soon! You deserve it! P.S. Here’s a little something to make the overnights easier :)

Dearest Demonia’s
You pinch my toes so hard, you callous my heels, rub and burn my ankles. You’re a dark and heavy little thing, its a little embarrassing to be with you; with everyone constatnly staring.
Though I will say you’ve always been the more stylish half of me and I’ve always been grateful to have you <3 Though I do get a little jealous sometimes when you always get all the compliments.
PS. Please stop toppling over air when we travel together. I could really hurt my ankles!!
Dear Beautiful
No need to be afraid of what others think.
We look great and you know it.
We’re cute, tall and powerful; so toppling is
inevitable.
I understand you feel overwhelmed, overdressed.
Rest assured you look lovely in our new height.
Looking forward to taking more instagram pics.

Hello Doc
I can’t say I’ve missed your mundane look but I do feel great pairing up for another long shift. You have always been my closest, most reliable friend. Beyond comfortable, and I treasure our long nights together... Thanks for holding me up from all the weird and unsavoury characters at night...
You underwhelm, underdress me but make me the most comfortable where I am the least for hours.
My favourite co-worker
I enjoy being able to comfort you when you are at your most anxious. You’ve always appreciated my mundane and most boring traits and I thank you for it. Looking forward to our shift tonight!
PS. Stop spilling oil and chocolate sauce on me!

positionality, self portrait. a case study in personality & intersectionality.

Transcripts
A rendered environment of my own personality and intersectionality.
With the flooded world representing a wealth of knowledge and the unknown. Clutterred by urban fixtures and vegetation representing my island background, Philippines; vegetation representing growth and my own politics.
Fixtures indicating a lower income and socio economic status, which spreads onto the ocean to represent pollution and self doubt. Barricades that represent disadvantages through intersectionality and the absence of power, alternatively with the floating raft to represent an immigrant identity looking to move forward and push to succeed in my own circumstances.I love to create art and play videogames and this is represented by the 'Frostmourne' sword piercing through the earth. Signifying a hope and want for my passions and design prowess to one day pierce the earth and make an impact in some way.Study the place of power or lack there of. These type of voices and perspectives are often hidden or niche styles overshadowed by the western canon and I have really come to appreciate who I am, where I come from and where I can go with my own design capabilities.

This studio was unique in that it has provided me the opportunity to work with others beyond the scope of my geological limitation. Having worked with students from RMIT Vietnam, Elisava Bacelona School of Design, and University of Arts London.
Air and planetary health was the primary case study for this studio, and my group has devised a plan to generate a heuristic practice to visualise and otherwise invisible phenomenon; air pollutants.

a metatextual case study in cult culture.

Transcripts
Born from an intrigue for the unknown and beyond. What lies beyond our own mortality, what happens when we are truly at rest, and do our actions in life truly matter; or in fact mean anything when in the end we all die alone. Thanatology and interpretations of the afterlife having always interested me, as a non believer growing up in a religious household. The idea of an all knowing and benevolent god sitting and waiting to judge all living beings has always perplexed me growing up.
With the state of the world as we know it, will this benevolent god interject and unleash its divine punishment?particularly drawn to media interpretations of this nature. Videogames, shows, music and literature that challenge and attempt to communicate the idea of what lies beyond. In more recent news, strange occurrences with aliens and the supernatural are common knowledge by virtue of whistleblowers and truth-seekers.Closer to home, Melbourne has seen a growing cult culture in the CBD. With university aged individuals as the prime target for unsuspecting calls to friendship and aggregation. And though not all are religion based, I often question how far faith can truly drive a person in their everyday lives. Whilst there is nothing left of what religion can offer a skeptical nihilist, it’s truly baffling how far religion’s hope for eternal salvation extends to others. And how ancient text continue to influence people’s judgement for what's right and wrong, leading to good intentions paving the way for evil most of the time. This idea of righteousness when humans are inherently proud beings, forming collectives according to personal interest. Politically, believing that their way of fixing the world is the right way, and by nature refuse to believe they are wrong. These subjects tend to be quite confronting and uncomfortable, therefore I have chosen a more lighthearted approach to morality, faith and the afterlife aimed at university aged skeptics and cynics. Making light of the grim mortality of all humans in the form of a text based choose your own adventure game. Eldritch is a project that aims to bring light to these subjects for those in a similar predicament as myself.A bridge between the bleak reality of death, the weight of our actions, and the consequences that follow; with the lighthearted, underground, and unseeming nature of collectives coming together as a way to create nonchalant discussions on Thanatology; and perhaps even having a little fun along the way.Recalling the scrappy origins of MUDs marries well with Eldritch’s delivery method. For it too is a small scale dissent from the faithful and growing cult culture in Melbourne. Discussions of the unpopular opinion is also evident in the social and gaming application Discord; which admittedly has had a history of bad reputation with its seedy users and questionable discourse. Of which I thought would make the perfect deliverable forEldritch as a chatbot, as this idea of having a morality adventure game in a service as immoral as Discord creates perfect irony.A common ground for discussions on my project’s ethos. Other such discussion boards with similarly edgy content such as Reddit and 4chan were considered. However, my programming capabilities extend only to Discord and its developer tools so far.

attack! of the space roaches!. augmented reality experience, queen victoria market.

Transcripts
In a galaxy far, far away, on the planet Roachalon-9, a cosmic catastrophe was brewing. The Roachalians, a mischievous species of intergalactic cockroaches, had grown tired of their dusty home world and decided it was time for a change of scenery. So, they hatched a plan, or rather a grand scheme, to invade a new planet and Earth was their chosen destination.
Equipped with tiny rocket boosters and space helmets from discarded coles bags and soda cans, the Roachalians embarked on their cosmic journey. With their antennas twitching in anticipation and their little cockroach legs gripping the control panel, they soared through the stars, leaving trails of cracker crumbs behind.Meanwhile on Earth, Melbournians sipped oat lattes, blissfully unaware of the impending cockroach calamity. Little did they know that the universe’s silliest invaders were about to crash-land on the city of the arts and culture, armed with an insatiable appetite for crumbs and a flair for intergalactic mischief. As the spaceship descended upon Earth’s atmosphere, it was clear that the Roachalians meant business or at least as much business as a gang of spacefaring cockroaches could muster.

Get ready for an otherworldly adventure as these tiny, extraterrestrial roaches embark on the silliest invasion in the history of the cosmos!Attack of the space roaches
Earth's crumbs have never been in such danger, and humanity's vacuum cleaners are about to face their greatest threat.

unseen, melbourne. a call to action for melbourne's housing crisis

Transcripts
In our city, the everyman is faced with housing challenges, from individuals sleeping rough and enduring long-term homelessness to residing in excessively cramped living spaces. Many feel the strain of rising rental costs, compelling the need to seek housing beyond city limits, away from employment opportunities, essential services, and social support circles. Decades of under-investment in social and affordable housing alongside a growing population, rising housing costs, and the COVID-19 resulting in non sustainable home acquisition. The Australian dream has long since died yet its vicious effects become seamless in everyday city life. The issue we confront is a dire one, mirroring a silent yet widespread housing and homelessness crisis here in Melbourne.

Homelessness in the Queen Victoria Market tent city is a complex and poignant issue that warrants reflection. The juxtaposition of a bustling, iconic market with a makeshift community of homeless individuals is a stark reminder of the stark disparities that persist in urban landscapes. The presence of a ‘tent city’ in such a prominent location serves as a vivid testament to the pervasive problem of homelessness in our society. It’s a sobering reminder that, despite the affluence and vibrancy of a city like Melbourne, there are individuals who find themselves without stable shelter. This visual incongruity prompts a necessary dialogue about the systemic issues that lead to homelessness and the inadequacy of support systems. For visitors and passersby, it offers a glimpse into the lives and struggles of those experiencing homelessness. It challenges preconceived notions and stereotypes, fostering a deeper appreciation of the diverse factors that can lead to homelessness. This experience can be transformative, prompting individuals to take a more compassionate and proactive stance on the issue. Moreover, the tent city situation raises questions about public policy and the responsibility of society. It calls into question the adequacy of social services and the need for more comprehensive solutions to address homelessness. By reflecting on this issue, we can better understand the systemic and structural factors that perpetuate homelessness and advocate for meaningful change. The Queen Victoria Market tent city also highlights the resilience and resourcefulness of those experiencing homelessness. It is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to adapt and survive even in the most challenging circumstances. This resilience deserves recognition and respect, and it should inspire a commitment to finding long-term solutions to homelessness.

when creating an AR experience that looks into homelessness, special consideration had to be taken in order to avoid making a spectacle of the issue, in turn coming off as insensitive and tone deaf.Precautions had to be taken when
approaching both the contents of the experience as well as its correlation to its context; and the story it tells. A subtle unraveling of the initial story is told through environmental means. By showing more than telling the story, exposition and overanalysing the homeless crisis is averted.
As one of the main concerns in writing the story for this AR experience was the overwhelming data dump that makes most existing narratives, articles and research on this issue. To be able to translate my written story into pure visuals was then the main component that makes the AR experience.
Done through the symbolic elements and almost psychadelic nature of the experience. It is through this ambiguity that the audience is able to piece together the hidden message and story of the experience. Similarly aligning with the unseen story that is homelessness in Melbourne.
